This is Earth Science Week—the annual event where we can all celebrate the earth sciences, and the researchers and educators whose work contributes to our society’s understanding of our planet, our ecosystems, our oceans, and our atmosphere. This year’s theme is “Visualizing Earth Systems”—an everyday theme around here!
Getting straight to the fun stuff—there are three contests to enter (due date for all three is Friday, Oct 16):
- Photo Contest: “Earth Systems Interacting”
- Visual Arts Contest: “Picturing Earth Systems”
- Essay Contest: “Earth Sciences Visualization Today”
Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14, is National Fossil Day! Do you have fossils in your rock collection? (Of course!) Tell us what your favorite fossil is! Send photos! We’ll post a collage later…
Finally: the Earth Science Week’s GeoWord of the Day: Bilibinskite (bi-li-binsk’-ite). A semi-metallic brown cubic mineral with a crystal structure related to that of gold, and previously referred to as rickardite : Au3Cu2Pb•nTeO2
