Most Bay Area residents know that earthquakes are a regular feature of life in the region. But few may know that earthquakes can be caused not only by natural forces, but also by engineering practices, particularly as part of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) activity, to tap energy sources such as steam in geothermal reservoirs and oil and natural gas trapped in rock.
Elaborating on this activity, Induced Seismicity: Manmade Earthquakes, featuring ESD’s own Ernie Majer, will be aired on KQED’s “QUEST” program tomorrow (Wednesday, September 21) at 7:30 on Channel 9. (It will also be shown on HD Channel 709.) The story has been posted on the QUEST website in its entirety.
Tune in to the broadcast, or click the link above to find out how these man-made earthquakes occur and how the rumbling is impacting one community that lives near the world's largest geothermal field.
