In keeping with a desire to expand future collaboration opportunities and promote international cooperation, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Wuhan University of China agreed (in a memorandum of understanding—MOU) to collectively explore their mutual interests in scientific education and research. The MOU raised such possibilities as a sharing of personnel and scientific information over the next five years, as well as a sharing of teaching resources and establishing collaborative research programs, including a joint research center focusing on topics of interest to both institutions—such as water quality and water resources.

Representing ESD at the signing ceremony were ESD Director (and Associate LBNL Director) Donald DePaolo, ESD Deputy Director and Environmental Remediation and Water Resources head Susan S.
