Biography

Lawrence (Larry) Hutchings is partner and lead scientist at Jarpe Data Solutions, providing micro-earthquake analysis for reservoir modeling and micro-zonation for earthquake hazards. Previously from 2007 to 2016 he served as a Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and from 1986 to 2007 he was a Research Scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. His focus has been geothermal reservoir modeling and methods to develop design ground motions for hazard studies for critical infra-structure. Prior to this, he worked for 10 years in industry evaluating earthquake hazards for nuclear reactor and conventional power facilities. He also has several patents in human navigation and owned a start-up company between 2001 and 2007. He has taken a personal interest in mentoring students and has been a mentor for more than 50 interns. He has also worked extensively with scientists and students in developing countries and has advised 10 PhD’s and Master’s students on his research topics.

Research Interests

Dr. Hutchings research has focused on understanding the earthquake source process and subsequent wave propagation and site response for small and large earthquakes. He has researched how forward modeling of large earthquakes can predict (in an engineering sense) what ground motion future earthquakes can be expect to generate. His focus on small earthquakes has been on how micro-earthquakes can be used to constrain the wave propagation and site response of large earthquakes (empirical Green's functions), site response for micro-zonation of hazards within cities, and how micro-earthquake recordings can be used to image the sub-surface (tomography).
