Biography

Dr. Mamun Miah is a Project Scientist in the Energy Geosciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences with an emphasis in Civil Engineering from the University of Mississippi in June 2016. Upon receiving a dissertation grant from LBNL, he worked on modeling fluid-induced seismicity by coupling a nonisothermal, multiphase flow code TOUGH2 with an earthquake simulation code PyLith. He is currently working with David McCallen on furthering his knowledge of structural engineering and engineering seismology. Prior to coming to the US, he completed his Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 2009.

Research Interests

  • Regional scale earthquake hazard and structural risk assessment
  • Exascale computing with applications in seismology and earthquake engineering
  • Nonlinear structural dynamics from strong ground motions
  • Coupled solid-fluid interaction and computational geomechanics
  • Finite element and finite difference methods on HPC and parallel computing
  • Large scale data analysis using machine learning algorithms

Education

  • PhD in Engineering Science, University of Mississippi, 2016
  • M.Sc. in Civil Engineering, University of Mississippi, 2010
  • B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology, 2009

Experience

  • Project Scientist, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 2022-Present
  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 2016-2022
  • Research assistant, University of Mississippi, 2011-2016
  • Student Assistant, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Summer 2013 and 2014

Awards

  • Recipient of prestigious Dutch-Bangla Bank Scholarship for outstanding result in high school
  • Received Bangladesh Govt. Scholarship both in high school and college level
  • Grant recipient for Ph.D. dissertation from LBNL
