Biography

Toshiyuki Bandai (Toshi) is a postdoctoral scholar in the Energy Geosciences Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, working on watershed modeling using numerical modeling and machine learning with Dr. Carl Steefel. After studying soil physics at The University of Tokyo, Japan, he began working on inverse modeling of water transport in soils at University of California, Merced, USA, with Dr. Teamrat A. Ghezzehei.

Research Interests

Toshi’s research interests lie at the intersection of hydrology and applied math. While he conducted experimental studies in Japan, he has been more interested in modeling work since he began his Ph.D. studies. During his Ph.D. thesis, he investigated how soil moisture data can be used with physical models through inverse modeling. In addition to traditional inverse modeling in vadose-zone hydrology using an evolutionary algorithm, he developed inverse modeling frameworks using physics-informed neural networks and finite element method with adjoint-based derivative computation. With those techniques, he demonstrated that we could solve large-scale inverse problems to estimate soil hydraulic properties and boundary conditions from soil moisture data. He is currently interested in reduced-order modeling for large-scale water and chemical transport simulations.
