The 4 Pillars

To realize the full potential of subsurface resources for energy security, game-changing improvements and technology breakthroughs are needed in our ability to characterize and predict subsurface processes, and to access, engineer, sustain induced conditions, and monitor the subsurface. Through considering the grand “adaptive control” challenge and related supporting challenges, SubTER is exploring targeted Research, Development and Demonstrations (RD&D) within and across four interrelated topic areas. Key goals of these topic areas, referred to as pillars, include:

  • Wellbore Integrity & Drilling Technologies – develop the scientific basis, technologies and methods that enable the construction of wells with improved integrity over decadal time scales and develop wellbore construction methods and technologies, and deploy evaluation and intervention technologies that address deficiencies related to reservoir access needs of other pillars.
  • Subsurface Stress & Induced Seismicity – develop technologies to quantify the in situ subsurface stress, including critical stress states along faults that could trigger induced seismicity, and manipulate such stresses to improve reservoir performance and reduce risk.
  • Permeability Manipulation & Fluid Control – develop a knowledge base and capabilities to manipulate subsurface flow through an integration of physical alterations, physicochemical fluid/rock interaction processes, and novel stimulation methods implemented at the field scale.
  • New Subsurface Signals – transform our ability to characterize subsurface systems by developing new approaches to sense the subsurface and analyze multiple large datasets, to identify critical system transitions, and to develop process control approaches.
