AGU, the world’s largest Earth and space science association, celebrates individuals and teams through its annual Honors and Recognition program for their accomplishments in research, education, science communication, and outreach. The honorees have transformed our understanding of the world, impacted our everyday lives, improved our communities and contributed to solutions for a sustainable future.

Bill Collins, EESA Associate Laboratory Director, was selected to present the Jule Charney Lecture at the Fall 2024 AGU meeting. The Jule Gregory Charney Lecture is presented annually to a prominent scientist who has made exceptional contributions to the understanding of weather and climate. The Charney Lecture honors the memory of Jule G. Charney, a dominant figure in atmospheric science over the three decades following World War II.

EESA Chief Development Officer for Research, Newsha Ajami, was awarded AGU’s Ambassador Award, given annually to between one and five honorees in recognition of their outstanding contributions to one or more of the following areas: societal impact, service to the Earth and space community, scientific leadership, and promotion of talent/career pool. The Ambassador Award honors individuals whose achievements extend beyond those recognized by traditional scientific discipline awards.

Marcos Longo, CESD Research Scientist, was selected to receive the Thomas Hilker Early Career Award, which is given annually in recognition of unusually creative work by an early career scientist that advances scientific understanding of biogeosciences. This award memorializes Thomas Hilker, whose groundbreaking work to quantify global photosynthesis from satellite data was a technical and scientific challenge that required both long-range vision and tremendous diligence and attention to detail.
